Purpose
The city council is the top management authority for the community. It ensures the lawful, capable and citizen-oriented operations of municipal agencies and officials. The tasks of the city council are defined in the municipal laws of the Kanton; their authorities are specified in the municipal code of the community of Arlesheim.

Elections
The city council is elected every four years by voting-age residents of Arlesheim. The term of office begins on July 1.

Organization
The city council usually meets weekly for a two-hour session in the city hall. Every member of the city council is in charge of one or more areas of responsibility. The business items are prepared by city administration and are presented and explained to the responsible member of the city council. The municipal code controls how the business items are handled.

The council president represents the city council to external parties. The council president chairs the meetings of the city council. The director of the municipal administration is the recorder of the city council and chairs the administrative unit. The members of the administrative departments have an advisory voice in the meetings of the city council.
